Photo Print Sizes Explained

Which size to print for albums, frames and walls, and how to avoid cropping your photos.

Start With the Shape of Your Photo

Every photo has a shape, called its aspect ratio. A print looks best when its shape matches the photo, because then nothing gets cropped off.

Most cameras take photos in a 3:2 shape. Most phone cameras use 4:3, which is a little squarer. Square photos, like many Instagram posts, are 1:1.

Sizes for Camera Photos (3:2)

These sizes match the 3:2 shape exactly: 4x6, 6x9, 8x12 and 10x15 inch. 4x6 is the classic album print. 10x15 inch is a large print for a wall.

Sizes for Phone Photos (4:3)

6x8 inch matches the 4:3 shape of most phone photos exactly. 3.5x5 and 5x7 are close, and crop only a little. If you print a phone photo at 4x6, a strip is cropped from the top or bottom.

Sizes for Square Photos (1:1)

Choose 5x5, 6x6, 8x8 or 10x10 inch. Square prints look great in a grid on a wall or a shelf.

How Big Can You Print a Phone Photo?

A good rule is 300 pixels for every inch of print. A 4x6 inch print needs about 1200 x 1800 pixels, which almost any phone photo has.

For large prints, always upload the original photo. Photos saved from WhatsApp and other chat apps are compressed and can look soft when enlarged.

For a size-by-size pixel table, see the resolution guide. To compare finishes, read glossy vs matte.

Got questions?

4x6 inch. It matches the shape of most camera photos and fits standard albums and frames.

6x8 inch keeps the whole photo, because it matches the 4:3 shape most phone cameras use.
