How to Make a Photo Book

Seven simple steps from a camera roll full of photos to a finished book.

Start With the Story

The easiest photo books have one clear idea: a trip, a wedding, a baby's first year, a school year, or a family festival. Decide the idea first, and the rest of the choices get simple.

Also think about who it is for. A book for grandparents needs bigger photos that are easy to see. A book for yourself can be more crowded and personal.

Step 1: Gather Your Photos in One Place

Collect every photo you might use into one album on your phone or one folder on your computer. Then remove near-duplicates and blurry shots, and keep the best of each moment.

A book of a few great photos beats a book of many similar ones. Pages with room to breathe look better than pages packed with every shot from the day.

Step 2: Use the Original Files

Upload the original photos from your camera roll, not copies saved from WhatsApp or other chat apps. Chat apps shrink photos to save data, and the lost detail shows up as blur in print, especially on a large page.

If someone sent you a photo, ask them to send the original file, or ask them to share it as a document so it is not compressed.

Our resolution guide explains how many pixels each page size needs.

Step 3: Pick a Size

Choose the size by where the book will live and how it will be used. A5 is comfortable to hold and easy to gift. A4 and 12x12 inch have room for big, dramatic photos. Square 8x8 inch handles portrait and landscape photos equally well. Compact sizes such as 4x6 inch are small enough for party favours.

Our photo book sizes guide compares every size side by side.

Step 4: Choose the Cover and Paper

Hardcover books have a rigid cover that protects the pages and stands upright on a shelf, which suits weddings, anniversaries and gifts. Softcover books are lighter and suit trips, events and books you make every year.

Pages are printed on 200 GSM art paper, with a glossy or matte finish depending on the size. Glossy gives brighter colour; matte reduces glare and fingerprints. Our photo book paper guide explains the choice in more detail.

Step 5: Arrange the Pages

Put the photos in an order that tells the story, usually by time. Break long stories into chapters, such as one per day of a trip or one per event of a wedding.

Mix full-page photos for your best shots with collages of several smaller photos for the busy moments. Try to keep faces and important details away from the fold in the middle of a spread, where the pages meet.

Step 6: Keep Text Short

A short caption, a date or a place name adds a lot. Long paragraphs on a photo page are hard to read and take attention from the picture. Read every caption again for spelling before you order.

Step 7: Check Every Page, Then Order

Go through the preview page by page. Check that nobody's face is cut off at the edge, that no photo looks blurry, and that the order of the pages is right. Once you order, delivery time for your pin code is shown at checkout.

Got questions?

There is no fixed number. Choose enough photos to fill the pages you want, and prefer fewer, better photos over many similar ones. Give your best shots a full page.

Yes. You can upload photos straight from your phone's camera roll in your browser, on Android or iPhone, and design the book there.

The estimated delivery time for your pin code is shown at checkout before you pay.
