Glossy or Matte Photo Prints?

Two finishes, two looks: how to pick the right one for your photos.

Same Photo, Different Feel

A photo print can have a glossy or a matte surface. The picture is the same, but the finish changes how colour looks, how light bounces off the print, and how it feels in the hand.

Glossy Prints

Glossy prints have a shiny surface that gives bright colours, deep blacks and strong contrast. Photos look vivid and punchy, which suits colourful scenes such as festivals, travel, food and celebrations.

The trade-off is reflection. Under strong light, a glossy print can show glare, and it shows fingerprints more easily.

Matte Prints

Matte prints have a soft, low-shine surface. They reflect much less light, so they are easier to look at from any angle and hide fingerprints well. Colours look a little softer and more natural.

They suit portraits, black-and-white photos, prints that will be handled a lot, and prints that will hang near a window or under a bright light.

Which Should You Choose?

Bright, colourful photos you want to pop: glossy.

Portraits and family photos for an album or a frame: matte.

Prints going behind glass in a frame: matte, because it cuts down on reflections on top of the glass.

Prints that will be passed around, stuck in a scrapbook or given as a gift: matte, for fewer marks.

Black-and-white photos: either works; matte gives a softer, classic look.

Not Sure? Order Both

Prints cost little, so it is easy to test. Order a few of your favourite photos in each finish and keep the one you prefer for the rest of your photos.

Start with a few 4x6 prints.

Got questions?

Both finishes last with normal care. Keep prints out of direct sunlight and handle them by the edges. Matte hides fingerprints better, so it looks cleaner after handling.

Matte is usually better behind glass, because glossy prints can add extra reflections to the glare from the glass.

You choose glossy or matte when you order. The options for each size are shown on that size's page.
