Portrait, landscape, square or pocket-size: how to pick the right book for your photos.
The shape of your photos should guide the shape of your book. If most photos are portraits of people, a portrait book shows them best. If most are scenery or group shots taken sideways, choose landscape. If you have a mix, or many square photos from Instagram, a square book handles every shape without much cropping.
A4 is about 21 by 29.7 cm (8.3 by 11.7 inch). It is one of our larger books, with room for one striking full-page photo or a collage of four to six.
A4 portrait suits wedding albums, family yearbooks and portrait-heavy books. A4 landscape suits travel books, group photos and wide scenery, and an open spread gives a panoramic view.
A5 is about 14.8 by 21 cm (5.8 by 8.3 inch), half the size of A4. It is comfortable to hold, easy to post as a gift, and a good all-round size.
A5 portrait suits everyday albums and baby books. A5 landscape suits short trips, honeymoons and single events.
Square pages handle portrait, landscape and square photos equally well, which makes an 8x8 inch book the easiest to design. It suits Instagram-style books, anniversary gifts and year-in-review books.
12x12 inch is our biggest book. Full-page photos look dramatic and spreads have room for large collages. It suits premium wedding albums and coffee-table books.
These compact books fit in a bag and are small enough to give the same book to several people. 4x6 portrait and 6x4 landscape suit party favours and mini trip books. 6x9 portrait feels like a paperback and suits story-style books with captions. 9x6 landscape shows travel and nature photos without the size of A4.
Wedding album: A4 portrait or 12x12 inch square.
Travel book: A4 landscape, 9x6 inch landscape or A5 landscape.
Baby's first year: A5 portrait.
Instagram photos: 8x8 inch square.
Gift for grandparents: a larger size such as A4 or 12x12 inch, so the photos are easy to see.
Return gifts for a wedding or birthday: 4x6 inch.
In general the bigger the page, the higher the price: 12x12 inch is our largest and most expensive book, and A5 costs noticeably less than A4. Each size has its own page showing its current price, so you can compare them without starting a project.
